  • 1 cup Saltine Crackers Crushed, acts as binder
  • 1/2 cup Milk Whole or 2% milk works best
  • 1 tbsp Italian Herbs Dried oregano and basil are excellent alternatives
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder Can use fresh diced onions instead
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Fresh minced garlic can be substituted in double
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper Optional, omit for milder flavor
  • to taste Salt Adjust based on dietary preferences
  • to taste Pepper Adjust based on dietary preferences
  • 1/4 cup Flour For dredging patties
For the Gravy
  • 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup Can substitute with cream of chicken soup
  • 1/4 cup Milk For consistency

Method
 

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, crushed saltines, milk, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and optional cayenne pepper. Mix until just combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into 8 evenly sized patties, about ½ inch thick, and dredge each in flour.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown each side of the patties for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour the gravy mixture over the browned patties in the baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  7. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
